How do I commission a portrait?

Start by filling in the enquiry form on the Commission page. Once I've reviewed your enquiry I'll be in touch — usually within two to three business days — to discuss the project and confirm availability.

What makes an interpretive commission different from a realistic pet portrait?

Accepted Answer

Interpretive commissions are more expressive and intuitive. These works incorporate colour, atmosphere, symbolism, and creative mark-making to tell a deeper emotional story. You may choose to get an interpretive portrait of your pet, where the likeness of your pet is still completely recognisable, but it is a more loose and personalised piece.

What can inspire an interpretive commission?

Anything meaningful to you. This could include memories, places, emotions, animals, symbols, natural elements, colours, or personal experiences. It is often a combination of those.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. Many commissions begin with only a feeling, story, or idea. We refine direction together during consultation.

What animals do you paint?

Dogs and cats make up the majority of my pet portrait commissions, but I paint all animals. I particularly love wildlife portraits and these can be included in the interpretive commissions.

How many pets can be included in one portrait?

I can paint multiple animals in a single composition. The price increases with the number of subjects, and I'll discuss sizing recommendations with you — a larger format is usually advisable when there are two or more animals, to give each one the space and detail they deserve.

Can I commission a portrait of an animal that has passed away?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and I consider it a privilege to do so. Memorial portraits are some of the most meaningful commissions I take on. Good reference photographs are especially important in these cases, so please gather the best images you have — I'll work with what you're able to provide.

Can I commission a portrait as a gift?

Absolutely. Gift commissions are one of the most popular requests. Optional gift wrapping is available.

Question 9

I would like to gift one of your pieces to a loved one but I don't have any photos, what can I do?

Accepted Answer

I offer gift cards, where you can pay your desired amount and a gift certificate can be issued to who you wish. From there, the recipient and I can start consultation and they receive their gift.

Can I see progress during the painting?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if you wish. While most people like to leave it as a surprise and just trust the process, if you would like to see where your commission is at just ask! Once the final layers are applied, significant changes become difficult.

How far in advance do I need to book?

I'd recommend enquiring as early as possible if you have a specific date in mind — for example, a birthday or Christmas gift. I maintain a waiting list and will contact you as soon as a spot opens.

What makes a good reference photo?

Natural light, eye-level angle, and a sharp focus on the face. Avoid flash and heavy filters.

How many photos should I send?

As many as you'd like. I'd rather have twenty to choose from than feel limited by two or three. Send originals where possible — not screenshots or images that have been cropped and re-saved — as compression reduces the detail I have to work from.

My photos aren't great. Can you still work with them?

Send them and let me assess. I can often work with imperfect references, particularly if there are multiple photos showing the animal from different angles. I'll be honest with you about what's achievable.

How much does a commission cost?

Prices start from $150 AUD for an A5 single-subject portrait and increase with size and complexity. I'm happy to discuss options if you have a particular budget in mind.

Do you require a deposit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A 50% deposit is required to secure your place in the commission schedule. The remaining balance is due before the painting is dispatched. Payment details are confirmed at the time of booking.

What payment methods do you accept?

Bank transfer. I'll confirm the details when we finalise your commission. Cash is accepted if you are local and intend on collecting the artwork in person.

How long does a commission take?

Most commissions are completed within two to six weeks of the deposit being received, depending on my current schedule and the complexity of the piece. I'll give you a more specific timeframe when we confirm your booking.

How is the painting packaged and shipped?

Originals are packaged flat between acid-free tissue and rigid board, then placed in a reinforced postal box. I take packaging seriously — the painting has to arrive in the same condition it left the studio. A certificate of authenticity is included with every original.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. I ship from Geelong, Australia to most countries. International shipping costs are calculated at the time of dispatch and added to the final invoice. Delivery times vary by destination — typically one to three weeks.

Is the painting framed?

Framing options are available for select works at an additional cost. For commission pieces framing is discussed in the consultation and will be included in the price discussed.

What are your prints made on?

Accepted Answer

All prints are produced on museum-quality, acid-free fine art paper using archival pigment inks. They're signed by hand and, where applicable, numbered as part of a limited edition.

Do prints come framed?

Prints are shipped unframed, rolled in a protective tube or flat-packed depending on size.

Who owns the copyright to my commissioned portrait?

Copyright in the artwork remains with me as the artist. When you commission a portrait, you receive the original painting and the right to display it privately. You may not reproduce, sell, or use the image commercially without my written permission.

Can I share the portrait on social media?

Yes, and I'd love it if you did. A credit or tag is always appreciated.

Do you retain the right to photograph and share the work?

Accepted Answer

Yes. I photograph all commissions before dispatch and may share them on my website, social media, and portfolio. If you'd prefer your commission to remain private, please let me know at the time of enquiry and I'll respect that.
